Father\u2019s Day up in Flames<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\"LeFather\u2019s Day is on June 18, and that likely means that dads will be getting plenty of ties as gifts. The first Father\u2019s Day in America was proposed by Sonora Louise Smart Dodd in 1909, who wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran<\/p>

and widowed single dad. On the first Father\u2019s Day, Dodd suggested that all fathers be honored with a rose\u2014red for those still living, and white worn for those who had passed. In France, dads receive quite a different gift: a Flaminaire lighter. Flaminaire commercialized the first lighters in 1908, but it wasn\u2019t until the 1950s, when consumerism began to peak, that the Flaminaire company embarked on an ad campaign linking their lighters to a French Father\u2019s Day. It has been traditional to offer dad a lighter ever since.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A Holey History<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\"Doughnut<\/p>

Each year, 10 billion doughnuts are made in the United\u00a0States. That\u2019s 30 doughnuts (and a few extra pounds) for\u00a0every single person in America. With 13,000 doughnut\u00a0shops lining America\u2019s streets, it should be easy to find one of your favorites on June 2, National Donut Day.<\/p>

Doughnuts have been a beloved treat in America since the\u00a017th century. It was the Dutch, settling in New Amsterdam\u00a0(present-day New York), who first fried dough in oil.<\/span><\/p>

These first doughnuts were called olykoeks, or \u201coily\u00a0cakes.\u201d Of course, these original olykoeks were more\u00a0fried dough than doughnut and did not yet have their\u00a0signature hole in the middle. We have to fast-forward\u00a0almost 200 years until Elizabeth Gregory, the mother of\u00a0a ship captain, created what we might recognize as the\u00a0first true doughnut.<\/p>

Gregory fried her dough with nutmeg, cinnamon, and\u00a0lemon rind, ingredients undoubtedly borrowed from her\u00a0son\u2019s cargo hold. She also added hazelnuts and walnuts\u00a0to the doughy center, the spot that might be undercooked.<\/p>

Gregory thoughtfully called her new recipe a doughnut. It\u00a0was her son, Captain Gregory, who made the doughnut\u00a0round with a hole in its center. Some claim that the hole\u00a0allowed the doughnut to be placed on the spoke of the\u00a0ship\u2019s wheel, allowing the captain to steer with both\u00a0hands. In an interview with the Boston Post newspaper,\u00a0Captain Gregory recollected how he cut the first hole in\u00a0a doughnut with the top of a round, tin pepper box.<\/p>

Doughnuts did not become the beloved treat they are\u00a0today until World War I, when Salvation Army volunteers\u00a0brought doughnuts to American soldiers in the trenches\u00a0to lift their spirits and remind them of home. And it\u00a0wasn\u2019t until the first Dunkin\u2019 Donuts opened in Quincy,\u00a0Massachusetts, in 1950 that the spelling changed from\u00a0doughnut to donut. It was once spelled donut only in\u00a0America, but we now find donuts (and doughnuts) as\u00a0far away as Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand.<\/p>

\"\"Going Postal<\/strong>
On June 13, 1920, the United\u00a0States Postal Service declared\u00a0that it would no longer send
children by parcel post. As\u00a0strange as it may seem, we\u00a0now remember June 13 as
No Mailing Children Day. On\u00a0January 1, 1913, the U.S. Post began mailing\u00a0parcels and packages. Americans could now\u00a0buy and sell large dry goods by mail. Some,\u00a0however, took advantage of this service and\u00a0sent their children through the mail. After all, the\u00a0delivery cost of mail was cheaper than a train
ticket. Newspaper headlines captured the phenomenon: \u201cMail Carrier Safely Delivers Boy of 10 3\/4 lbs to Grandmother, Cost 15 Cents.\u201d Assistant Postmaster General John Koons eventually declared that children didn\u2019t fit within the classifiction of harmless live animals.<\/p>

\"A<\/p>

A Witch History<\/strong>
There was a time when Salem wanted to forget its sordid history. As late as 1895\u2014over 200 years after the hysteria\u2014the Philadelphia Inquirer ran\u00a0a headline reading, \u201cThe People of Salem Do\u00a0Not Like to Be Questioned in Regard to the
Witchery Affair.\u201d It wasn\u2019t until playwright\u00a0Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953 as\u00a0an allegorical response to Senator Joseph\u00a0McCarthy\u2019s anticommunist hearings that the\u00a0witch trials entered the popular imagination.
Historians and scientists began to reexamine the\u00a0cause of the hysteria. Some scholars suggested\u00a0that piety was the root of the problem. Notions of
witchcraft came straight from scripture. Pious\u00a0people accused others of witchcraft, while\u00a0pious judges adjudicated the trials.<\/p>

Others have blamed ergot poisoning. The theory\u00a0goes that stores of rye contaminated with ergot\u00a0fungus caused residents of Salem to hallucinate, convulse, and suffer delusions, symptoms that\u00a0were equated with witchcraft. Over the years,\u00a0this theory was debunked, only to be revived, debunked, and revived again.\u00a0No one truly knows how the all-consuming witch\u00a0hysteria gripped the community of Salem and\u00a0other surrounding towns. Other theories point\u00a0to corrupt church politics, family feuds, and the
absence of a modern justice system. What we do\u00a0know is that the city of Salem has tried to make\u00a0amends to Bridget Bishop and the hundreds of
other victims who were wrongfully charged and\u00a0punished. Salem opened the popular Salem\u00a0Witch Museum in 1972 and dedicated a Witch\u00a0Trials Memorial in 1992.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Instructions:<\/strong>\u2022 *Have the pecan crust baked, cooled, and\u00a0ready to go. Whisk the corn starch and water\u00a0together in a cup. Add the corn starch mixture\u00a0together with the sugar in a saucepan. Mix in\u00a0the strawberry pur\u00e9e. Bring the mixture to a\u00a0boil on low to medium heat, constantly\u00a0stirring with a spatula to avoid scorching.
Once the mixture boils, cook it for 3 to 5 more
minutes, or until it thickens and turns a deep
red. Remove the strawberry sauce from the
heat, and allow it to cool. Meanwhile, using
a mixer, beat the cream cheese well. In a
separate mixer bowl, whisk together the
Dream Whip with the milk and vanilla,
according to package directions. Whisk it until
it begins to form soft peaks, about 4 minutes.
Add the cream cheese and powdered sugar to
the Dream Whip mixture, and whisk for 3 to 5
minutes, or until it\u2019s smooth and creamy.
Spread the Dream Whip cream cheese filling
onto the prepared pie crust. Once the
strawberry sauce has cooled enough, mix the
sliced strawberries into the sauce. Spread the
strawberries and sauce mixture over the
Dream Whip filling. Cover your no bake
strawberry dessert and allow it to chill in the
fridge for at least 4 hours, or overnight if
possible. When it\u2019s ready to serve, you can
top it off with a dollop of whipped cream or
serve it as is. It\u2019s so delicious!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

June 22 is Worldwide VW Beetle Day. What has
made the Volkswagen Beetle one of the world\u2019s
most recognizable and beloved automobiles?
First and foremost is its innovative and fun
design\u2014a small and compact car with an
innovative curved roof, a feature that makes it
both aerodynamic and adorable. The Beetle was
designed for much more than just fun, however;
it was also affordable, practical, and reliable.
Volkswagen means the \u201cpeople\u2019s car,\u201d and these
cars were intended to be affordable for all,
costing just 31 weeks\u2019 worth of pay. Vintage
Beetles sported an air-cooled rear engine, which
meant that it did not need expensive cooling
units and could reliably operate in both heat and
cold. It also got excellent gas mileage, more than
30 miles to the gallon. The car\u2019s simple engine
and parts were easy to replace and inexpensive
to repair and maintain. All of these reasons made
the VW Beetle the world\u2019s best-selling car for
decades. The original Beetle was so popular that
it was built for 65 straight years from 1938 to
2003, making it the longest-produced vehicle
in history. No other car even comes close.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
