My name is Barbara Irland Teramoto, and I\u2019m honored to be the Resident of the Month for April.

I was born on August 3, 1938, in Danville, Pennsylvania, and grew up in a family that valued education. Both of my parents were faculty at Bucknell University, where my father taught electrical engineering and my mother taught home economics. I later attended Bucknell as well and earned a degree in Biology and Chemistry, and worked as a medical technician.

I have three children and two grandchildren. My son and granddaughter live in New Zealand, one of my daughters lives in New Jersey, and my other daughter and grandson live nearby here in South Carolina, which is one of the reasons I moved to Legacy Reserve. Before coming here, I lived in Arizona for more than 30 years.

Some of the hobbies I have enjoyed over the years include quilting, beading, music, and singing. I especially loved quilting and even knitted hats to donate to charity. A fun fact about me is that I know how to operate a cryostat from my time working in the medical field.
What I enjoy about living at Legacy Reserve is the support and care from the team here, and the many activities that keep me engaged, especially the painting and art programs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Karen Smith Santiago<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBorn in Jamica, Queens NY, Karen spent her youth frolicking the streets. As a\nteen the family moved to Commack, NY. Karen and her friends volunteered at\nthe local CP Center every summer, as counselors to disabled children. Karens\u2019\nlove of helping others started to grow. As an older teen Karen became a\nCandy Striper for two years earning a 200-hour pin.\nAfter high school Karen entered Pilgrim State Hospital School of Nursing at the\nage of 17. Upon graduation, wanting to enter the military, she needed 2 years\nof work experience as an RN. This is where Karen met her future husband. In\n1979 Karen received a direct commission as a 2 LT in the Army Nurse Corp. It\nwas an exciting life.\nnd\nIn 1980 Karen and her husband Tom married and in 1982 their son Robert\nwas born. Juggling family life and military had its challenges.\nIn 1991, Karen left the Army and returned to school to obtain a master\u2019s\ndegree as a Nurse Practitioner. Again, civil service called her, and she became\nan NP in a jail medical unit in Riverhead, NY. Karen found another exciting\ncareer.\nUpon retirement Karen and her family moved to Florida. Wanting to be\ncreative Karen learned to play the viola. She joined the local community\norchestra where she played for 20 years. Having strong organizational skills,\nshe joined the board of directors and served in many positions.\nLife being what it is, her husband passed in 2009. Her son Robert decided he\nwanted a change in location, so off to Greenville they went in 2023. Karen\nwanted to be part of a community. After a search, she chose Legacy Reserve.\nBeing one to jump into activities, she is active in crafts, local trips and the\nVeteran\u2019s group. You see Karen and her dog Emily in the halls talking to\neveryone. Karen is so glad she chose Legacy Reserve.
